Laurie Leiber, MPH is Director of Media Advocacy at the Marin Institute. Leiber has more than 20 years experience as an alcohol industry watchdog and practitioner of environmental prevention of alcohol-related problems. As Director of the Center on Alcohol Advertising, Laurie planned and executed a national media advocacy campaign -- "Hands Off Halloween" -- to stop the use of child-friendly Halloween imagery to promote alcohol. Hands Off Halloween introduced dozens of grassroots groups to local media advocacy aimed at reducing alcohol promotion to youth. Her often-cited research on recognition of the Budweiser Frogs by school children exposed the irresponsible targeting of underage youth by alcohol producers. Since joining the Marin Institute in 2003, Leiber created TalkBack, a Web-based system that allows consumers to file formal complaints concerning alcohol advertising and marketing. Complaints forwarded to the Federal Trade Commission from TalkBack helped pressure the Beer Institute into establishing a third party review panel for consumer complaints. Leiber is a contributing editor to the Marin Institute’s quarterly newsletter and an author of Solutions to Community Alcohol Problems: a Roadmap for Environmental Prevention.
