Courtney Macavinta is co-author of the critically acclaimed book for teen girls, RESPECT (Free Spirit Publishing, 2005) and is the publisher of Respect Rx, where she offers advice and news for teens and adults.
Courtney also is an award-winning journalist whose articles have been syndicated by The Associated Press and published by The Washington Post, Wired News, Red Herring, Business 2.0, and The Sacramento Bee online. From 1996 to 2000, Courtney was a political reporter for CNET News.com, where she covered the first Supreme Court hearing on Internet free speech and interviewed newsmakers. In 2000, Courtney joined ChickClick, a ground-breaking online and radio network that served more than a million girls and women. As managing editor, and then editorial director, she oversaw publishing and helped expand the network to cover topics such as college, health, news, relationships, and sex. In 2002, Courtney became a full-time freelance writer and also received a Fund for Investigative Journalism grant to investigate women's working conditions in Silicon Valley.
Courtney has been interviewed by CNN, National Public Radio, USA Today, and other national and local media about teen and women's issues, young women and self-respect, relationships, communication, media, and politics. She also has been featured as an expert in The Quarterlifer's Companion (McGraw-Hill, 2005) and Cool Women, Hot Jobs (Free Spirit Publishing, 2002).
Fighting for young women's empowerment has always been Courtney's passion. She has conducted workshops based on RESPECT for hundreds of teen girls, and has also worked with organizations including Girls For A Change, the YMCA, CanTeen, Our Schools, Our Media, the Ms. Foundation for Women, and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
