The Impact of the Web On Eating Disorders

We live in a high-tech, media-driven world and our children may surpass us in their ability to keep up with the fast-paced complexities. It can be exciting to watch them become savvy as they learn to use the computer and other technology at ever younger ages and to become more aware of the world around them thanks to the wide range of TV, Internet and other available media.
Technology is indeed incredible in the many ways it enriches the lives of our children. But more often we're learning about how technology combined with the intensity of the media world can have a destructive impact on our children's physical and emotional health. There's of course the "couch potato" factor: that electronic games, TV and computer time have become famous for contributing to the significant weight gain amongst our youth. Then there's the powerful negative influence of advertising to kids on TV, in magazines and, more subtly, online, through cell phones and in the movies.
But, there's another, arguably even more dangerous impact that fast-paced technology and intensive media influence is having on kids and teens in the world of eating disorders...
