Video Games Can Be a Healthy Choice

karaokeparty.jpg

According to a Mayo Clinic study published in the current issue of medical journal Pediatrics, video games that require kids to jump, dance, and move help them burn calories and stay more active.

"The point is that children -- very focused on screen games -- can be made healthier if activity is a required part of the game," said Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, obesity researcher and study leader.

Makes sense to us. That's why we've reviewed -- and recommended -- these dance and exercise-oriented games since we first started publishing. We've even encouraged parents to play along with their kids.

For games that get kids moving, check out some of our top picks.

We pledged NEVER to purchase a x-box, playstation, gameboy or any other silly video game for our kids. This Christmas, a caring (but not thinking) relative (who has no children) gave our kids a Playstation, along w/ some games. Since then, it's been sheer HECK! My kids are (were) like zombies who appeared to have their eyes GLUED to the set even when their parents were speaking to them. They no longer wanted to play outside, wanted to play with neighbors, wanted to go w/ us out to eat, etc. They were also waking up EARLY to play the stupid games. So, as RESPONSIBLE PARENTS we regulated the Playstation. They each get it for 1-2 hrs on Saturdays and that's it!!! Now our lives are peaceful again, our children are productive and we have some sanity and control back in the home. It's no wonder U.S. children are obese, unhealthy, often lazy and just plain spoiled. They are that way because we parents ALLOW them to sit in front of silly games (often immoral ones where bad overcomes good) and expect nothing else from them. We fought that battle and have won. Hopefully others will fight it as well.
