Kate Winslet: Our Hero

We're so excited that Kate Winslet is speaking out against ultra-thin models and actresses.

"What I resent is that there is an image of perfection that is getting thinner and thinner," Winslet said in an interview with the BBC's Sunday AM television program, "and it’s truly upsetting to me."

Winslet says she hopes that she has been a different sort of role model for girls -- one who hasn't had to diet to be successful. She's also a role model for parents: Winslet says she keeps magazine's that feature ultra thin women away from her own young daughter.

There are great lessons here: Winslet knows that parents are responsible for helping their kids develop a healthy body image -- and that sometimes it's OK to say no to media.

Of course, she knows she can't keep her daughter away from these images forever. "It’s only a matter of time before she becomes aware of it, and it frightens the life out of me," Winslet said in the inteview.

That's why as kids age parents need to develop other strategies, from presenting their kids with healthier media, to helping them deconstruct so-called perfect images.
