Weighty Film Worth Watching

skinny.jpg

HBO's gripping documentary THIN follows four anorexic women in Florida’s Renfrew Center (an eating disorder treatment facility). This is a must-see film for any family whose children have either had a brush with an eating disorder, or whose circle of friends includes people afflicted by this devastating disease.

That said, parents, you must watch with your kids. The movie is rated for mature audiences, but we believe that a thoughtful 14-year-old can handle the material -- with a little guidance from you.

A special note of caution: Tips on how to binge, purge, and avoid eating are discussed in the movie. While some people might feel that these tips teach girls (or boys) how to be bulimic or anorexic, the fact is that motivated kids will figure out these techniques anyway. It's more important for families to know what to watch out for so they can break through any denial they may have.

THIN airs on HBO on Nov. 14 and will be out on DVD on Nov. 21. Click here for our review. Click here to read HBO's discussion guide. Parents, you may also want to check out our tips for boosting body image.
