Teachers, Too, Use TV as a Babysitter

Last month, the Kaiser Family Foundation released the results of a study that found more and more parents are using TV as a babysitter.
And if you think kids are getting a rest from the tube while they are in school, well, think again.
A new piece of research suggests that the "TV as a babysitter" trend is not limited to the home. More than 50 percent of respondents in a telephone survey of teachers who use film as a teaching tool reported that non-instruction use of media was "common" or "quite common".

Well, that settles it. In a few generations, social contact will be a thing of the past. I mean, we've literally got sex over the internet, so why should you ever leave the house? And risk skin cancer? I can't wait to look at my grandchildren with fear and loathing.

Oh my god. I think this is atrocious. Are instructors just getting lazier? I don't want my child watching tv at school; I want her learning. Whatever happened to READING and WRITING and that other one?

I don't think this is too surprising. Schools incorporate whatever media there is into the classroom. It's important that kids learn to use computers, and I'm sure the television is at least somewhat educational...it's n ot like they're watching football, right?

I'm guilty of this... it's just so easy to park the kids in front of the tv when I need to take a bath or nap or just...get away.

Speaking of TV babysitters....
I couldn't find an appropriate spot to
address this issue. But what about
America's (ex) TV baby-sitter, "Melanie
Martinez" of PBS Sprout's "Good Night Show".
The editors of "Common Sense" gave her
high marks for her work, but now that
a couple of videos highlighting her
work from 7 years ago have surfaced,
Comcast/PBS Sprout has fired her.
See the old videos, have a sense of
humor, remember how good she was on TV
and how your kids liked her, and write
PBS Sprout to get her her job back.
See interview with her on link below.
Thanks!
J
