PlayStation 3 Will Cost $499...
and That's the Cheap Version

Some parents probably breathed a quiet sigh of relief in March when Sony announced that it would be pushing back the release of the PlayStation 3 until this fall, thus delaying the inevitable cry of "Buy me one!" from tweens and teens across the country.
The delay may have reset the clock on the countdown to "Buy me a PS3!" meltdown...but trust us when we say that a little extra time isn't going to be enough to buffer PS3 sticker shock.
At a press conference Monday, Sony announced that the PS3 would hit shelves on November 17 at $499. The upscale model -- the one your kids will probably try to convince you that they "need" -- comes in at $599. For the sake of comparison, Microsoft's next generation gaming console, the XBox 360, runs for $299 or $399.
Ooch.

...And that's why I got a 360 when it launched. Since I have access to "GameInformer", it obviously gets this type of information to me much quicker, although I also know that with production cost in mind, the PS3s could easily sell for over 1000 dollars and be justified in doing so. But by the Wii anyways-- not only did the PS3 rip off its motion sensing techonology, but it is also about 300 dollars cheaper.
